AN IRISH PENAL CROSS IN BRONZE, with the figure of Christ in relief to the centre, with nails etched around him, beneath him a cock above a bowl & a scourge with three lashes. To the top the letters INRI and to the reverse the letters IHS and the date 1729. The original penal crosses were made from wood and of simple cruciform shape with short arms & a figure of Christ carved in high relief. The symbol of the cock & pot: has its roots in the story of Judas from the Gospel of Nicodemus. Dimensions: 4.5 x 1.5cm (L x W)
